Obituary for Harold Whitehorn

Harold Dean Whitehorn died February 25, 2018 after a brief battle with brain cancer. He was born March 18, 1940 in Stillwater, Oklahoma to Charley D. and Dorothy (Smoot) Whitehorn. Harold grew up in Oklahoma, Oregon and Colorado as his father worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He graduated from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 1958.
Harold was in the United States Army, stationed in Alaska, from 1961 to 1964. While in Alaska, he experienced the Great Alaskan Earthquake of 1964 and stayed in Anchorage for a couple years working for Northwest Orient Airlines. He received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Minor in Art from Fort Lewis College, Durango in 1970 and a Master of Social Work from the University of Kansas in 1976.
Harold met his wife, Jean (Sartoris), in Durango and they were married in 1973 in the Fort Lewis College Chapel. After leaving Kansas, he worked for the Probation Department in Pueblo, the Department of Social Services in Cañon City and retired from the Department of Corrections as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
Harold belonged in the outdoors and enjoyed being in the mountains among nature. He was an avid hunter, cross country skier, hiker and climbed several 14'ers. He was also a talented craftsman who created beautiful stained glass pieces, wood projects and restored a couple of VW bugs. He was a skilled marksman who competed, and won, several competitions. In later years he preferred to photograph animals, rather than hunt them.
He loved his family, a good book and a solid pun. His sense of humor was legendary and stories of his one-liners will last forever. He always supported his children, letting them know to make yourself happy and do no harm. He adored his wife and wanted her to be safe and loved above all else.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Dorothy Whitehorn.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Whitehorn; his two children, Patrick (Pam) Whitehorn of Parker; Kathryn (Jacob) Kelly of Fort Collins; one grandson, Owen Whitehorn of Parker; two brothers, Charles Lee (Nancy) Whitehorn of Cortez; Gene Arthur (Elaine) Whitehorn of Farmington, New Mexico and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers or food, donations can be made in his name to the Humane Society of Fremont County at 110 Rhodes Ave, Cañon City, CO 81212.
There will be no services; a private family memorial to be held at a later date.
