John Evans passed away on September 25, 2025, in Canon City, Colorado, he was born on July 19, 1942 in Gunnison, Colorado. His life was deeply rooted in the community he called home, and his legacy reflects a lifetime of service, dedication, and family. John graduated from Gunnison High School and soon after began a distinguished career in law enforcement. In 1968, he became an officer for the State Patrol and was stationed in Pagosa Springs. His commitment to public safety led him to serve as sheriff of Archuleta County beginning in 1972, completing the final two years of a term before being elected to a full four-year term himself. He served as sheriff until 1978. Following his tenure in county law enforcement, John continued his public service with the Department of Corrections. He remained with the department until his retirement in 2013. Retirement did not slow him down; instead, he joined his wife Toni in running their pest control business, working alongside her until his passing. John's life was enriched by a large and loving family. He is remembered by his wife Toni; sons John and Les; daughters Sondra and Jean; stepchildren Eric, Dave, Jeremy and Gary Jr. Sanders, and Tama McFarlin. He is also remembered by his siblings Ed Evans, Helen Kline, and Evelyn Brocail; three grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. Outside of work and family, John found joy in his horses and had a passion for watching horse races-interests that brought him both peace and excitement throughout his life.
John Evans leaves behind a legacy of service to his community and devotion to those he loved. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
